Collection: Early Style Hall Lanterns or Bell Jar Lanterns
It is the style of lantern that harkens back to some of the earliest designs in medieval 13th century. During that time, those designs consisted of basic panels of horn or glass. They were the first innovations by man toward the journey in lighting technology to chase away the shadows and dampness of dark hallways.
As our ideas and lighting needs evolved, so too did the hanging lamps used to illuminate rooms and passageways. It was the 18th century however, in darkly paneled homes, where light originally only shone from the fireplace and candles. So, homes incorporated the designs of their medieval and renaissance predecessors by enclosing the candles in glass meant to be hung from ceilings.
