Tripod shade holders fit on the burner of the lamp and hold the lamps shade. They use 3 wires to support the shade. The shade holder size should match the shade size in terms. For example a 7 Inch Tripod Shade Holder will work with a 7 Inch Fitter (Bottom Diameter) lamp shade. The actual size will vary slightly, but they are noted that way to work together.
