"I have four 40-year-old exterior light fixtures on my house, two on either side of the main entry, and two on either side of the garage door. They're colonial-style fixtures, and I've done repair work on them in the past. Recently, one of the 5/8" balls came off the threaded rod and couldn't be located. I ordered these balls, some brass threaded rod, hickies and new bulb sockets, and everything is now as good (maybe better) as new."
