Not easy to paint

"These wooden lamp bases are just what I need. However, I had a lot of trouble paining them. I sprayed on a painter/primer. I gave it 3 light coats as per the instructions. Still, after the 3rd coat, you could still clearly see the grain where the wood was not absorbing the paint where the grain was most prominent, leaving an uneven coat. I lightly sanded between coats but it did not help. I finally got out my power sander and that worked. I would have preferred if those extra steps and time were not necessary."
